Las Vegas Dermatology Seminar Daily 2
—by Colleen Hutchinson
Hello and welcome to Day 2 of the 25th Las Vegas Dermatology Seminar! Co-chair Dr. Lawrence Eichenfield and presenter Dr. James Del Rosso both look forward to the Las Vegas Dermatology comprehensive agenda, which today features 3 full sessions on Special Subjects in Skin Disease, Diseases That Need to Be on Your Radar, and Psoriasis Forum.
“Today’s session will start with a drill down into skin cancer, pigmented and non-pigmented lesion monitoring, photoprotection and a talk on What the Dermatopathologist Wants You to Know about Pigmented Lesions,” Dr. Eichenfield shared. “Our next session includes discussions on Derm-Rheum, urticaria, vulvar disease, and scars, and I am excited to hear Dr. Kenner-Bell’s What’s New in Pediatric Dermatology. And we have incredible faculty for our Psoriasis session! Drs. Adam Friedman, Tina Bhutani, April Armstrong and rising star from Yale, Jeffrey Cohen, will update us on papulosquamous disease, including case-based discussions with practical treatment suggestions.
Dr. Jonathan Zippin, who presented Identifying and Treating Contact Dermatitis on Day 1, educating on how to interpret skin diseases due to external exposures, feels Las Vegas Dermatology is about “Meeting old and new friends and learning about new advances in dermatology.”
It’s not just the content that makes this a great meeting, it’s also the ambiance and the critical connections made among colleagues. And the location! Las Vegas provides an opportunity to show off our uninhibited side. "A dermatology meeting at a new hotel in Las Vegas? That is exciting in and of itself,” presenter Dr. Del Rosso concurs. “For me, it is the opportunity to educate, dialogue with, and catch up with colleagues that I enjoy the most, along with getting to wear one of my new custom-made suits (one of my guilty pleasures)!"
“At Las Vegas Dermatology, I always learn something that will change my practice on Monday morning. The lectures are very clinically oriented and share the most up to date information with the audience.”—Brandi Kenner-Bell, MD
All of this is in service of what matters most – taking home the kind of breakthroughs that can make a difference in your patients’ lives.
In Session IV, Special Subjects in Skin Health and Disease, on Day 2, Dr. Vishal Patel will provide the Welcome and shared: “This will be an exciting discussion of how to consider pigmented lesions in patients of all backgrounds from the viewpoint of public health, dermatopathology, and evidence based clinical medicine. You won't want to miss it!”
Dr. Patel shared what he expects on today’s panel, Cases in Pigmented Lesions:
“This panel will discuss challenging situations the everyday provider faces in managing patients with pigmented lesions, including interpretation of dysplastic nevus histology biopsy results, whether all dysplastic nevi need surgical treatment, and how to incorporate conservative monitoring for low and high-risk patient populations.”
In The News in Topical Treatments for Psoriasis, Dr. Tina Bhutani will discuss the following:
“The last few years have provided us with new, effective, and safe non-steroidal topical therapies for patients with psoriasis. I will review the data and discuss how you can incorporate these novel medications into your practice.”
Dr, Jeffrey Cohen spills the beans on his main points to be shared in his Session 6 presentation, Psoriasis in Hard-to-Treat Areas:
“Psoriasis in certain areas of the body, such as the nails, palms and soles, scalp, or skin folds, can be particularly challenging to treat,” he explains. “Patients with psoriasis in hard-to-treat areas are often candidates for systemic therapies like biologics because involvement of these sites can have a major impact function and quality of life.”
“Generally,” Dr. Cohen continued, “biologics inhibiting interleukin-23 and interlekin-17 are the most effective agents for treating psoriasis in hard-to-treat areas.”
Dr. Cohen also shared that in his presentation, Practical Treatment Scenarios—Case Discussion, two pearls from the case presentation will be shared and expanded upon:
- The interleukin-17 inhibitor ixekizumab has strong data supporting its efficacy in treating nail psoriasis.
- For some patients, intralesional triamcinolone injections can be helpful for nail psoriasis.
Dr. Brian Berman presents twice today, first with Chronic Spontaneous Urticaria—An Update. “This will be a review of new and emerging targeted treatments of CSU.”
His second presentation, Scar and Keloid Prevention & Treatment, will be “an update on clinically useful medical and procedural strategies to prevent keloid recurrences and acne scars and to treat hypertrophic scars.”
Dr. Shehla Admani presents today on Vulvar Dermatology.
“The goal of this presentation,” Dr. Admani explained, “is to get comfortable with the vulva! We should all be comfortable talking about it, examining it and treating it! We will review lichen sclerosus management pearls and differential diagnoses to consider when the exam or symptoms don't fit perfectly with lichen sclerosus. If it's not lichen sclerosus, what is it? Let's talk!”
Additionally, attendees will hear from Dr. Meenal Kheterpal in her presentation, Monitoring Pigmented and Nonpigmented Lesions:
“We are facing a melanoma epidemic in our country—total body photography and serial dermoscopy is the only way not to pin cushion our high-risk melanoma patients with enumerable biopsies.”
Our faculty are greatly looking forward to tomorrow’s final Day 3.
“This year we have a special one-day cutaneous oncology forum on Day 3 of the meeting,” states Dr. Vishal Patel. “This special session will discuss more advanced topics in cutaneous oncology that face multidisciplinary providers who are managing complex patients with more challenging or advanced tumors—tumors that may need systemic and combination therapy, as well as discussing sensitive topics such as consideration for elderly patients with limited life expectancy.”
Consider next year attending in person if you are reading this from home. Attend next year to gain knowledge, exchange ideas, meet new colleagues, and catch up with everyone in your professional circle. Plan for next year!
“Every year I am look forward to the great line-up of world class speakers and the opportunity to connect with my colleagues near and far!”—Dr. Tina Bhutani
Dr. Kheterpal shares the critical nature of tomorrow’s content:
“I am looking forward to finally attending a meeting in the US focused on cutaneous oncology involving experts from all around the country to form a multidisciplinary quorum. This type of multidisciplinary approach with ideas and consensus generation is critically needed to treat our complex skin cancer patients.”
Look for our Day 3 newsletter tomorrow morning in your inbox that will detail a day dedicated to cutaneous malignancies, including two unique presentations and a dermoscopy course. Have a great day, from the faculty and leaders at MedscapeLIVE!
