Las Vegas Dermatology Seminar Daily 3
—by Colleen Hutchinson
Hello and welcome to Medscape’s final Day 3 of the 25th Las Vegas Dermatology Seminar! This week has been a whirlwind of clinically oriented lectures, with updates and reviews of the latest proven breakthrough treatments for even the hardest patient cases. With Las Vegas Dermatology's wide-ranging, comprehensive agenda, attendees have covered all of their CME needs from the stunning backdrop of the brand-new Fontainebleau in Las Vegas!
Attendees share that every year at this meeting, they come away with the critical, applicable tips, lessons and updates that change their practice on Monday morning.
Co-chair Dr. Lawrence Eichenfield and presenter Dr. Daniel Butler anticipates a great day today at Las Vegas Dermatology, which features a meeting focused on cutaneous oncology and involving a slew of multidisciplinary experts from all over the country.
“Today is a special day run by Dr. Vishal Patel, with an incredible set of faculty discussing cutaneous malignancies,” shared Dr. Eichenfield. “There will be critical updates in diagnostic approaches and therapy. In addition, Ashfaq Marghoob, a world leader in dermoscopy, will be directing a dermoscopy course. This should be an incredible set of talks and discussions!”
Dr. Butler concurred, stating, “I’m excited to be part of Las Vegas Dermatology's innovative and engaging group! Not many conferences with this many top speakers and such creative sessions.”
Dr. Patel provides the Welcome for Session VIII on Day, Updates in the Management of Cutaneous Malignancies.
“This will be a cutting-edge discussion of the evolving field of targeted and immune therapy as it relates to melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer,” shared Dr. Patel. “We will be specifically looking at new and earlier indications for the use of this treatment that can provide life changing results for patients historically considered for upfront systemic treatment.”
Dr. Butler presents today on Challenges of Geriatric Cutaneous Oncology, an increasingly critical topic for all practicing dermatologists.
“There’s no right answer on how to treat a basal cell in an older adult,” says Dr. Butler. “There’s only a best answer for each patient at that specific visit. We will talk about the importance of discussing all options and sharing the decision.”
Dr. Butler also will serve as a panelist on Challenges & Controversies in Cutaneous Oncology.
“I’m so happy that older adult patients are part of this discussion. Despite how common they are, we neglect the challenge of clinical decision-making for older adults. The best way to face this challenge is to talk about it… that’s what we’re now doing.”
Dr. Kevin Emerick presents today on Updates in the Management of Resectable Melanoma.
“This session of Las Vegas Dermatology will provide high yield information on the rapidly changing approach to resectable stage II and III melanoma. In particular, we will drill down on recent clinical trials focusing on neoadjuvant and adjuvant approaches for resectable advanced stage melanoma.”
Dr. Emerick will also sit on today’s panel, Challenging Cases:
“Challenging Cases will present the types of cases that push us to use all of our knowledge, experience, and colleagues to find the best care for patients. These cases highlight the real-world challenges that cutaneous oncology providers face.”
Dr. Patel shares what he plans for attendees in his presentation, Gene Expression Profiling in Cutaneous Oncology:
“We will 1) discuss the current offering of GEP options in melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer assessment and management; 2) Describe the strengths and weaknesses of current examples of GEP as it relates to melanoma and CSCC risk stratification; and 3) Identify potential applications for GEP in the treatment of melanoma and CSCC.”
Dr. Meenal Kheterpal will speak on Update in the Management of Advanced Basal Cell Carcinoma in Las Vegas Dermatology's Session 8: Updates in the Management of Cutaneous Malignancies.
“Unlike SCCs and melanomas, BCCs staging and prognostication has been vague. Understanding advanced basal cell carcinoma definition is important to identify patients who can benefit from medical management for BCC,” shares Dr. Kheterpal.
“I will discuss how, in complex basal cell carcinomas, hedgehog inhibitor targeted therapy has been a mainstay of therapy for almost a decade. Now with immunotherapy in the BCC treatment paradigm, we comprehensively evaluate the clinical data to inform the decision to treat complex/advanced BCCs.”
“Every year I look forward to the great line-up of world class speakers at Las Vegas Dermatology and the opportunity to connect with my colleagues near and far!”—Dr. Tina Bhutani
